Mobile Commerce DailyPervasive was pleased to have Brian Stein quoted in Mobile Commerce Daily’s recent article, “Swiping trumps tap-and-pay in building mobile commerce trust”. The article reports that “security issues, consumer habits and the lack of near-field communication support will keep tap-and-pay payments on the backburner this year.”

Looking at the challenges of consumer adoption, Brian notes that “The problem is not that they don’t want to use it, it’s that they don’t know how. . . They don’t have the technology.  Assuming that the technology around tap-and-pay works seamlessly, I think it would be marginally easier to use tap-and-pay.”

With minimal consumer interest and convenience at stake, retailers and payment providers alike are having difficulty building adoption for tap-and-pay solutions, and are instead moving towards building solutions around existing swipe based transactions.

As we’ll continue to explore at the Mobile Strategy FirstLook 2014 conference this week, payment mechanisms which integrate with existing systems and workflows will be more easily adopted, and absent any other incentives to drive change, will be the successful strategies.
