Internet of things concept with iconsAs we’ve noted before, the Internet of Things (IoT) will revolutionize everything. It is already happening too, most notably in the manufacturing sector also known as the Industrial Internet. Experts are predicting this is the next big Industrial Revolution to impact manufacturing.

According to a Goldman Sachs report in the Harvard Business Review last year, IoT is also signaling the third wave of the Internet Revolution, starting with the actual inception of the Internet and followed by the rise of mobile. This latest wave will not only consume manufacturing but other sectors as well in the future.

Manufacturing and the Industrial Internet, which includes actual factories plus supply chain and logistics, is an overreaching industry but the importance of technology is imperative.

A report from Business Insider declares:

Globally, manufacturers will invest $140 billion in IoT solutions over the next five years. Of all of the industries analyzed, manufacturers will be the earliest adopters of IoT solutions and will invest heavily in new IoT solutions for factory floors.

Here’s how it works:

Sensors are embedded within machines on the production line. These sensors are linked to an invisible wireless network and then remotely controlled. The technology is so advanced that worn out parts can be detected before the human eye can see them. These same sensors can also indicate when supplies are running low or shipments are lacking and impact the supply chain and logistics.

With such advances, manufacturing will see improved and streamlined productivity in the production line. This means more can be made for less and in less time. It also means that new types of workers and skills are needed.

In order to create a seamless production schedule, new algorithms will need to be written and that requires new expertise and knowledge of technology. Also, it requires that these be user-friendly and easily understood for those using them. This will truly be a marriage of manufacturing and technology. Will you be ready?
